Impress Google with your Title Tag

Ponte Winery Web SIte

Ponte Winery Web SIte

As the second most popular Temecula Winery, I will pick on Ponte Winery to discuss the rest of the META Tags. They are the TITLE tag and the META Description. Both of these go in the HEAD of the HTML.

Ponte Winery has the most gifted team of marketing professionals of the Temecula Wineries. They are creative, supportive of other wineries, very prolific and nice people. With these skills it may seem hard to understand why their relative site popularity (according to Alexa.com) bounces them around between second and fourth most popular Temecula Winery web site. The mystery ends as soon as you examine their site optimization – it has been missing – until very recently. Surprise of all surprises, as soon as they started to address that issue, they jumped from fourth to second most popular site. I am guessing they have Infinity Arts to thank. It is hard to be too critical as they are the second most popular site, but with all their off-site Internet promotions, with a properly optimized site they should be the most popular winery site.

We are not addressing META Keywords at this time but we must always readdress the META Keywords as they are the foundation of the rest of our work. While Ponte uses keywords that I would have suggested, they are using too many. You need to optimize every keyword that you include in your META Keywords. They have provided token optimization for some and none for others. They also fall prey to the most common mistake of using their brand (multiple times) in their keyword list – if they don’t own #1 Google rank for their name already, then they have more basic problems. In other words, never use your brand in the META Keyword list as you are wasting real estate.

Here are Ponte’s home page Title and META Description.

<title>Temecula Winery &amp; Temecula Wine Tasting | Southern California Winery |Ponte Winery</title>

<meta content=”Ponte Winery is one of the most prominent Temecula wineries in Southern California. If you are looking for a superb Temecula wine tasting experience, Ponte Winery provides its visitors with a quality winery experience. Our Southern California Winery is located in the heart of the Temecula Wine Country.” />

TITLE TAG – How to use it.

As you may know, the text in the Title Tag is used by Google as the title for their Google listings. If we strip out the HTML, their Title reads: Temecula Winery & Temecula Wine Tasting | Southern California Winery |Ponte Winery.

1) The most basic problem I have is that it is designed solely for SEO optimization rather than thinking about people using Google who see this as Google’s title for all of Ponte’s listings. This tag is not readable. Most web sites go the other way and forget optimization when writing their Title tag. This is worse only because that site will never show up in Google’s top 10 for their keywords.

2) It is critical to include as many keywords as possible from the META keywords list in the Title. Ponte has included three so that is good. I would have cut down the META keyword list to just these three keywords (maybe one or two more).

3) The title is too long. I would try to keep it to eight words as the rest gets cut off on Google postings. You can see this if you do a Google Search on “Ponte Winery”

META DESCRIPTION – How to Use It.

Ponte Winery’s META Description currently reads: Ponte Winery is one of the most prominent Temecula wineries in Southern California. If you are looking for a superb Temecula wine tasting experience, Ponte Winery provides its visitors with a quality winery experience. Our Southern California Winery is located in the heart of the Temecula Wine Country. The primary issues that I would emphasis to optimize your META Description are:

1) Google uses the META Description as the text below the title of each posting for Ponte Winery. You must therefore take into consideration both the users of Google and optimizing keywords when crafting your META Description. This description is easy to read so they have considered the reader.

2) Use every META Keyword in the META Description. If you don’t have room to include the Keyword, think seriously about removing it from the keyword list. As I have said before, Ponte is using too many words in their META Keywords.

3) The first few words in the META Description are the most important. Try to put your most important keyword there. This idea is hard to implement. Ponte does not use the most important keyword until the nineth word.

4) Limit the length of the META Description to about 20 words. If you look at Google postings, that is about all they use. To optimize Ponte’s META description, I would shorten it.
